15-Minute Mozzarella Sticks Recipe (Gluten Free)
This mozzarella sticks recipe makes a healthy snacking option, because they’re baked, not fried. If you’re eating gluten free, you’ll be happy, because there’s a gluten-free recipe option, too. Everyone can enjoy the ooey, gooey, cheesy goodness of baked mozzarella sticks!
Are mozzarella sticks gluten free?
Well, not quite. A stick of mozzarella string cheese by itself is gluten free. But unless you use gluten free bread crumbs to make this mozzarella sticks recipe, will not be gluten free. Fortunately, I share both a regular version and a gluten free mozzarella sticks recipe down below.
How do you keep mozzarella sticks hot?
If you’ve ever bitten into what was supposed to be a warm, oozing mozzarella stick, only to find it cold and hard, I feel you. Keeping warm appetizers from getting cold at a party can be tricky. The good news is, I know a way to keep mozzarella sticks hot for the life of your party.
In a Slow Cooker
- Place a metal or silicone trivet into the bottom of a slow cooker.
- Wrap a double layer of aluminum foil over the trivet and set the warm mozzarella sticks onto the foil.
- Turn the slow cooker onto low power and place the lid on, slightly ajar, so they stay warm without cooking. If you have a “keep warm” setting on your slow cooker, even better; the baked mozzarella sticks will stay perfectly warm!

15 Minute Mozzarella Sticks Recipe
Ingredients
- ⅓ cup brown rice flour or all-purpose flour (not gluten-free)
- 1 egg beaten
- 1 cup gluten-free bread crumbs or Italian flavored panko bread crumbs
- cooking spray
- 8 each mozzarella string cheese
- ½ cup marinara sauce
Instructions
- Heat oven to 425F.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly spray with cooking spray.
- Arrange flour, beaten egg and free bread crumbs into 3 separate platters or pie plates.
- Dip cheese first into flour, then beaten egg, then bread crumbs, using one hand for the dry dip and one hand for the egg dip.
- Lay the cheese sticks onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Place cheese sticks in oven and bake for 5-8 minutes, turning over halfway through bake time. Cheese sticks are done when breading is slightly crispy and cheese is oozing.
- Arrange on platter and serve with warm marinara sauce.
These look sooooo good! I love your presentation! I made this recipe when my blog was pretty new and the photo didn’t do it justice at the time. Yummy!
Thank you so much for the nice comment and the awesome recipe inspiration, Saundra. I loved browsing your recipes!
I hadn’t tried mozzarella sticks until I went to America and not going to lie- I became obsessed! I need to make this for my mates here and give them a taste of what they are missing!
I find it fascinating when people from out of the country tell me that they’ve never tried some of the snack foods that we love here in the States, Arman. I’m really glad you were able to try mozzarella sticks, because they’re sort of a snack food icon! 🙂
Don’t you just LOVE quick and easy snacks like this? These are one of my favorites, too! 😀 What a fun choice for the SRC! 🙂 ~Kelly
I absolutely love them, Kelly! It was a delicious month with the SRC!
I love fried cheese sticks – I never thought about baking them!
I loved finding a healthier recipe for one of my favorite snack foods, Pam. It still may not be the healthiest appetizer on the block, but I’ll take these baked cheese sticks over a plate full of greasy fried cheese sticks any day of the week! 🙂
It’s amazing how quick these are to make. I had no idea cheese sticks were so fast. I’m going to try making them for my kiddos soon. They’ll love them.
Thanks, Chris! These 15 minute recipes are time savers that, as you know, really help to keep us out of the kitchen! By the way, I’m making your turkey pho tonight… but using some leftover chicken. Can’t wait!
Yes! These baked mozz sticks sound awesome…like the best comfort food ever! But I’m surprised you were able to mention the Packers-Seahawks game without shedding a tear…or throwing the computer out of the window into the snow. You must be on to the acceptance stage of grieving. 🙂 (I bet these mozz sticks helped you forget all about the pain…)
You know, Dave… I decided that it would be best if I sucked it up and put on my big girl panties after the horrific event that took place. Sure, I could cry and complain, but I liked the idea of drowning my sorrows in cheese a whole lot better! 🙂
Marsha, you are so sweet, and I absolutely love your post. It looks like you really enjoyed that bacon cornbread… and I can’t wait to start digging into YOUR delicious recipe index!
Thanks, Camilla… Saundra has some amazing recipes on her site!
I love the idea of these mozzarella sticks Becca. I think I’d opt for non-gluten free panko, but such a great idea for a quick snack!
Thanks, Renee. I opted for the non gluten-free version when I made them the second time, simply because I don’t need to eat gluten-free, but I’m glad that Saundra gave that option for people who need it!
I ate way more than my fair share of them, Janette! 🙂
WOA – Becca – these sound fabulous and look – well they look so good I wanna claw myself into the screen! YUM!
It’s hard to go wrong with loads of ooey, gooey cheese, right Shashi? Thanks for stopping by!
I love easy recipes that are kid friendly. My grandsons always order these in a restaurant, how easy they are to make at home. I know they will love them. Thanks for sharing.
I hope your grandsons love this healthier version of the mozzarella sticks, Joanne. Thanks for stopping by!
Excellent, fast&easy recipe. I used Pillsbury GF flour and Aleias GF And Dairy free bread crumbs. They were excellent not much different than the real thing.
