Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie
Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie has ground turkey and fresh vegetables cooked in gravy, topped with creamy mashed sweet potatoes. This easy shepherd’s pie recipe is a 30 minute casserole recipe that can be enjoyed any time of the year. It’s especially perfect as a St. Patrick’s Day dinner recipe, and a great use for Thanksgiving leftovers, too!
This is a Weight Watcher’s friendly dinner casserole recipe, with just 5 Smart Points per serving!
Cooking from scratch is something I enjoy doing, but truthfully, I work such long hours that sometimes, it’s just easier to make semi-homemade meals. As long as the convenience foods I use don’t have a lot of chemical preservatives, I don’t mind using them. Most of my meals from scratch are made on weekends, when there is very little else going on. Oh, and I love making casseroles with leftovers, too. That was my mom’s forte – her best casserole recipes came from things lurking in the fridge!
No matter what time of the year it is, I crave dinner casseroles especially ones that include the “foods of fall”, like sweet potatoes, apple pie, stuffing, roast turkey. Because I don’t want to wait months for a Thanksgiving turkey dinner, I created this easy sweet potato shepherd’s pie casserole recipe. It’s got the flavors I love, but it comes together in 30 minutes instead of the 3 hours that a full turkey and trimmings dinner requires.
Sweet potato shepherd’s pie is the perfect solution for a crazy busy life. Can you relate to the busy schedule?
Sweet Potato Shepherd’s Pie Shortcuts
By using prepared mashed sweet potatoes, you can cut 25 minutes from the dinner prep, because you won’t have to peel, boil, or mash any potatoes.
Nothing compares to homemade mashed potatoes, but when I’m in a hurry, I use the Simply Potatoes products. I find them in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. Taste wise, I think they’re really good, and time wise, you can’t beat them. Because they have varieties like shredded hash browns, mashed potatoes (regular and sweet), and diced potatoes, it takes all of the prep work and mess out of the picture. They’re great for making quick meals during the week. I use them in slow cooker recipes, and even just as simple side dishes on their own.
Brian and I love brinner (breakfast for dinner), so I use the prepared hash browns to make Potato Pancakes! When I created the sweet potato shepherd’s pie casserole recipe, I knew that I had loads of fresh, organic veggies to use up, so I added a bunch of them. Rainbow carrots, celery, mushrooms and onion, plus some frozen peas went into the mixture.
If you’re not into all of those veggies, this recipe can easily be adapted to use whatever you have on hand or the veggies your family likes to eat. Picky kids won’t eat the peas? No worries, just leave them out! But make sure to pat yourself on the back for getting them to eat those mashed sweet potatoes on the top of the pie, because that’s a veggie that’s loaded with nutrition! Here are some sweet facts on sweet potatoes:
FOOD FACTS – Sweet Potatoes
- High in vitamins B6, C, and D. Vitamin D is the one that we get from adequate sunlight, so if you’re feeling the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder this winter, eat some sweet potatoes and watch your mood rise! They’re also loaded with iron and they’re a good source of magnesium.
- One cup of sweet potatoes has just 96 calories, and can be walked off in just 15 minutes (and a medium walk pace).
- Sweet potatoes are naturally sweet-tasting but their natural sugars are slowly released into the bloodstream, helping to ensure a balanced and regular source of energy, without the blood sugar spikes linked to fatigue and weight gain.
If you are the type of parent that sneaks veggies into dinner so your picky eaters won’t notice, this sweet potato shepherd’s pie is the one to do it with. Cover up the ground turkey, gravy, and veggies with a layer of delicious mashed sweet potatoes and watch your kids ask for second helpings. A dreamy little dinner, low in cost to make and super convenient. What’s not to love about it?

Love the idea of shepherd’s pie with SWEET potatoes — and I’m going to start using “slamfantastic” as well. 🙂
Thank you, Julianne… and let’s submit and petition “slaamfantastic” to Webster’s Dictionary, okay? 🙂
I use the Simply Potatoes shreds in my Potato Pancakes but had no idea that they had mashed Sweet Potatoes, I’ll have to look for them.
I’m going to have to try this spin on Shephard’s Pie. Love all the fall flavors.
This was my first time seeing them in the stores, Karen. Maybe you’ll have better luck finding them closer to the Thanksgiving holidays, but you can ask your store manager to get them in for you, too!
Sweet potatoes on shepherds pie sounds delicious. I feel like it would really brighten up the flavor of it (and I love shepherd’s pie but sometimes the potatoes aren’t the star). Plus less work is good in my book. Also no complaints on the fast moving month from me, I can have sugar and grain again.
Thanks, Susan! The sweet potatoes give an extra layer of comfort to this dish, and I love how convenient it was to use the Simply Potatoes instead of making my own mashed.
I’ve made plenty of shepherd’ spies before, but never with sweet potatoes. That looks amazing.
Thanks, Christiane. This was my first time using sweet potatoes in shepherds pie, but it definitely won’t be my last!
I had no idea that Simply Potatoes carried sweet potatoes! How wonderful! And this looks like the perfect recipe to try them out on 🙂
I didn’t realize they had sweet potatoes either, Liz, but I’m SO glad that I found them. I typically make things from scratch when possible, but my sweet potatoes have NEVER been as creamy as these are. I love ’em!
Who knew you could buy sweet potatoes all mashed up. Cool! In Australia we have to cook our own. 🙂
Love the shepherd’s pie with sweet potatoes.
We’re so entitled and spoiled over here, Maureen. Of course, having these delicious convenience products is probably why I’m bigger than a house 😉
I’ve been wanting to make shepherd’s pie for a while now, Becca! This sweet potato version looks absolutely delicious! What a fun twist. Thanks for sharing, Chef!
The sweet potato topping added SO much more flavor to the shepherd’s pie than traditional mashed potatoes, Dave. I honestly don’t think I’ll be switching back any time soon 🙂
I love shepherd’s pie! Going to have to try this new twist on the potatoes for certain! Thanks for sharing at Wednesday Whatsits!
Thanks, Rachel. The sweet potatoes really gave the pie a great boost of flavor!
Thanks, Janelle!
I love sweet potatoes and I love shepherd’s pie but I must confess that I have never thought to put the first on the second. I always use potato potatoes. Why??? This must change!
Isn’t it funny how we look at foods every day and never think to pair them together? The wonder and awe of recipe development keeps me comin’ back for more. Thanks, Stacy!
I adore Shepherd’s pie – and have tried many different versions – but never tried a sweet potato topping – Love it Becca – simply LOVE the color!
Thanks, Shashi! The sweet potato topping is a little bit addictive, and OH so delicious!
Becca, this looks really good and like an amazing time saver on a busy evening – thanks!
Thanks, Donalyn! We truly enjoyed this version of shepherd’s pie. Being sweet potato lovers to begin with didn’t hurt 😉 Oh my goodness, you made pumpkin doughnuts?! I’m headed over to take a peek!
I’m obsessed with sweet potatoes. I found this post when coming back to look a those parfaits…this one looks like a winner, too.
You’re so sweet… thank you!
My children love sweet potatoes and they love Shepard’s Pie. I never thought about combining the two together. Thank yo for suggesting the combination.
You’re welcome, Bonnie. I hope your family enjoys the recipe!
Hello! This looks amazing…but my Hubs is a vegetarian!
Any suggestions to replace the meat?
Lentils perhaps?
TIA! :))
Hi Leah! I think lentils are a great substitution for the meat in the shepherd’s pie. I also think black beans or mushrooms would be a great choice. I hope you enjoy it!
I agree, Melanie… thanks!
They’re really my favorite part, Kat! I don’t know if you’ve tried the Simply Potatoes brand, but they’re SO FREAKING DELICIOUS!
I love a good casserole any time of year, too. Yours looks good good, and I can’t believe there are only 5 points!
